Dive into the King Living sustainable fabric collections

For five decades, we have led with sustainable design principles.

We are transparent in our approach and continue to reinvent, evaluate and adapt as the world evolves. One such way is the introduction of sustainable fabrics and rugs as conscious choices that don’t compromise on style or comfort.

Taking sustainable design to the next level, all of our upholstered furniture designs feature removable covers, extending the life of each design and simplifying care and maintenance.

We explore the benefits of sustainable materials in interior design and dive into the sustainable fabrics and rugs collection with Sebastian Nash, Textiles & Leather Development Manager at King Living.

The appeal of sustainable fabrics

When it comes to fabrics, sustainability involves a series of choices about how materials are sourced, produced and treated. The result is stylish, textural fabrics that have a lower environmental impact.

“People are increasingly aware of environmental concerns and looking for ways to make a positive impact.” Sebastian shares. “At the same time, advancements in technology and design have closed the gap between sustainability and style so choosing eco-friendly textiles doesn’t mean sacrificing on aesthetics.”

The primary advantage of choosing sustainable fabrics lies in the positive impact it has on the environment. Many sustainable fabrics are crafted from recycled materials, reducing the need for new raw materials. Sustainability and durability also go hand in hand, with sustainable textiles prized for their longevity, particularly for furniture and interiors.

King Living sustainable fabrics

Across the King Living collection, there are a number of indoor and outdoor fabrics made from sustainable fibres. Durable, stylish and comfortable, the sustainable fabrics deliver the same King Difference you’ve come to expect.

Pearl Beach Outdoor & Shoal Bay Outdoor

Capturing the essence of sustainability and outdoor luxury, both Pearl Beach and Shoal Bay are crafted with 78% solution dyed acrylic and 22% recycled solution dyed acrylic. While not fully sustainable, these fabrics are created in a way that reduces waste.

“During the weaving process you lose parts of the fibre,” Sebastian explains “Instead of wasting this, the fibre is vacuumed off the looms and re spun into yarn.”

After the weaving process, the textile is finished with a water and stain resistant, biodegradable fluorine-free treatment. It's easy to clean, stain-resistant, and water-resistant—all the attributes you'd want for outdoor living, but with the added benefit of sustainability incorporated.

Fabrics crafted with recycled fibres

Everleigh

An indoor fabric with a soft, velvet-like texture, Everleigh exudes sophistication and is made from 100% recycled polyester.

“Everleigh’s yarn is derived entirely from plastic bottles,” Sebastian shares. “This is an ideal textile for busy family life. It’s not only sustainable but is highly durable and easy to maintain.”

Everleigh is suitable for heavy domestic use, making it the perfect sustainable material for interior design. Everleigh takes conscious living to new heights, combining comfort, style and durability in a wide selection of colour choices.

Richmond

With sustainability benefits and rich beauty, Richmond ideally combines performance and function with aesthetics to complement modern living spaces.

“Richmond is partially created with world-leading recycled polyester made from plastic bottles,” Sebastian explains. “It can be hard to believe how soft the fibres are until you touch the fabric.”

Velvet-soft to touch, Richmond’s hues are inspired by colours in Australian landscape art at Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales. A heavy-duty choice, Richmond is suited to both domestic and commercial spaces.

Fabrics created from natural materials

Bowen

Soft and textural Bowen is a classic boucle featuring the distinctive looped yarn used extensively by the French couture houses and is partly created with natural wool.

“A large percentage of the fibres are made from renewable and biodegradable Australian wool,” Sebastian shared. “We have paired that with a light blend of cotton and acrylic, which gives Bowen its durability.”

Bowen is a breathable fabric that delivers year-round comfort no matter the season and is available in three neutral colourways.

Leather Collection

King Living sources leather from two tanneries in Europe. Both are renowned for their time-honoured craftsmanship and the benchmark set for sustainability in their industry. King Living chooses to work exclusively with these two suppliers, not only because they produce the finest upholstery leather in the world but also because of their dedicated stance on corporate responsibility.

Quality upholstery leather, like that sourced for King Living, is a by-product of the dairy and meat industry. This means hides that would otherwise go to waste are recycled to make leather and save it from ending up in landfill.

The King Living leather collection includes everything from full grain and corrected top grain leather to vegan suede.

King Living sustainable rugs

Beyond sustainable fabric materials, the King Living rug collection also features eco-friendly, sustainable choices.

Esperance Indoor-Outdoor rugs

A versatile sustainable rug that feels at home both indoors and outdoors, Esperance Rug is available in three natural, undyed colourways. For Sebastian removing dying from the process is part of the charm of the end result.

“The undyed textiles create a raw and one-of-a-kind result. It’s a real embrace of the material in its organic state and offers some beautiful natural variations.”

Crafted from yarn derived from recycled plastic bottles, the rug is hand-knotted into a luxurious, herringbone weave with a wool-like appearance. Suitable for busy spaces, the rug is fully bleach cleanable for easy maintenance.

Hawkesbury Rug

Hand-loomed and hard-wearing, Hawkesbury's is an eco-friendly choice, crafted from 100% recycled polyester.

"For an indoor rug, Hawkesbury is incredibly hard-wearing yet still soft underfoot," Sebastian shares. "You can bleach clean it, which is very convenient for family or pet friendly living."

Hawkesbury features a delicate array of pigmented colours that effortlessly weave together to compliment any colour palette and comes in three sizes.

Wool Rug Collection

All King Living wool rugs are crafted from 100% pure New Zealand wool, known for naturally soft fibres, longevity, and sustainability benefits.

Wool is a natural, resilient fibre with a luxurious feel underfoot. Wool rugs offer excellent insulation properties, giving warmth in winter and remaining cool in summer. They’re hypoallergenic, and the weave helps to resist dust mites, mould, and mildew naturally.

The rugs in our collection created with 100% New Zealand wool include:
