King Living History

Since 1977, design, innovation and comfort, have been the foundations of King Living. Five decades later and King Living is still a family owned and run Australian company, proud of its past and excited about its future.

1977

First foam furniture

David King and his mother, Gwen, began to make foam furniture from their home, selling the original designs at Sydney’s Paddy’s Markets.

1978

Removable covers

King Living introduced the concept of tailored removable covers enabling sofas to be refreshed with a new look or easily cleaned and maintained.

1979

Steel frame and flagship showroom opens

King Living released the first sofa with a durable steel frame, designed to last a lifetime. The flagship showroom, still operational today opened at Annandale.

1987

Introduction of Postureflex® Seating System and adjustable headrests

The Madison Sofa design was released, featuring the Postureflex® Seating System. Similar to the suspension used in luxury European cars such as Porsche and Rolls Royce, this system brought a whole new dimension of luxury and durability to sofa design. With the addition of adjustable headrests, King Living pioneered the flexibility that lets each individual find their own comfort level.

1990

Factory expansion

Continued success saw King Living move its factory to larger premises in Camperdown, NSW.

1991

Melbourne welcomes King Living

King Living expanded to Melbourne, with the brand opening a concession in the prestigious Daimaru department store.

2010

Twenty10 Sofa featured

King Living was featured at the 2010 World Expo, held in Shanghai, China. The King Living Twenty10 Sofa was designed specifically for the Australian Pavilion at the Expo and was also showcased over three levels in the VIP areas of the Pavilion, including the Commissioner General’s office. The third-level lounge bar was named after the Twenty10, which was created to embody sustainable urban living.

2011

More Oscars fame and King Outdoor Collection launched

The Delta Sofa was such a hit at Vanity Fair’s 2007 Oscars after party that it featured again in 2011. King Living moved outdoors with the King Outdoor collection, starting with the popular Delta Outdoor design. Delta Outdoor was soon joined by the Jasper Outdoor. The Outdoor Collection takes the best of indoor sofa design, including modular flexibility and hidden storage compartments, and is redesigned for the Australian climate and lifestyle.

2012

New showrooms

King Living continued to expand, opening its 13th showroom in Adelaide, South Australia.

2013

Neo, revolutionary sofa design

The Neo Sofa design is launched and is winner of the Australian Furniture of the Year Award - Best of the Best.

2014

Perth opening

King Living enters Western Australia, officially opening its 14th showroom in Perth. There is now a King Living Showroom in every capital city in mainland Australia.

2015

International showrooms

King Living opens two international showrooms in Singapore and New Zealand.

2016

King Cove Outdoor released

King Living releases King Cove Outdoor sofa and wins at the Australian Furniture Awards.

2017

Sleep+ Mattress released

The Sleep+ brand was introduced, the first truly breathable and customisable mattress.

2018

New showrooms

King Living continued to expand, opening showrooms in Bondi, Australia, and Xuhui, China.

2019

More new showrooms

Showroom expansions continued with showrooms opening in Bangsar, Malaysia, and Granville, Canada.

2020

Further expansions and new warehouse opening

King Living opened the Newcastle Showroom and completed a refurbishment of a new concept store at Moore Park. A state-of-the-art warehouse facility also opened in Smithfield NSW.

2021

Further expansion

In 2021 King Living opened the London Showroom and a second showroom in Singapore (Alexandra) plus a new manufacturing facility in Thailand.

2023

Sofa milestones

Jasper celebrates 20 years since original launch and the 1977 Sofa was released, a contemporary take on the first King Living sofa created in the seventies

2024

Further expansion and upgrades

Showrooms in Adelaide and Nunawading were both refreshed with a new look and the first United States showroom opened in Orange Country, California. The Haven Sofa, Jasper Coast Sofa and King Sofa Bed were launched.

2025

Further global expansion

The largest-ever showroom will open in Balgowlah, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, along with the third U.S. and Canadian locations in Portland and Toronto.
